Stepwise | Oil Extraction Analytics for CO2 Emission Reduction

Stepwise is a Norwegian startup dedicated to energy management and CO2 emissions reduction. It was founded by the end of 2021, partially with the help of capital coming from the USA.

At the beginning of their journey, Stepwise incorporated with Kongsberg Maritime – a Norwegian company established at the beginning of the 19th century that provides technology, equipment, and services needed for sustainable maritime operations for over 200 years.

This made Stepwise one of the most reliable startups in the current history of Norway.

After being recommended by one of our satisfied clients GoExpedi, we met with Stepwise founders Matthew Johan (CEO) and Anders Attramadal (COO) to establish their needs, requirements, and budget for their product.

The main goal was to turn data into sustainable action, targeting big corporations like BP and Shell.

After signing the contract, Stepwise has entrusted us with the whole product.

We became responsible for everything, from the system’s architecture setup and tech-stack choice, through the back-end and front-end of the project, up to Stepwise's website creation.

This was also the moment when we became Stepwise's exclusive technical partner – taking once more the role of CTO in yet another trailblazing project.

Becoming a CTO of this project was one thing – finding common values and mission was a completely different level.

Initially, we focused on conducting thorough business analytics and collaborating closely with Stepwise to define their target audience and develop a precise solution.

Our team worked closely with both Matt and Anders to understand the complexities of the oil extraction industry and the specific requirements for reducing CO2 emissions.

This collaboration helped us design a comprehensive analytical platform, but also establish a sort of bond between us and the end-result we hoped to achieve.

The main issues we had to address with our software:

• The need for robust, consistent, and transparent ESG compliance and reporting.
• Governments' expectations towards collaboration and transparency for timely ESG data reporting.
• Industry challenges with inconsistent and non-standardized ESG data.
• Current lack of context, quality, and completeness in ESG data.
• Growing consumer sentiment and demand for lower emissions.

At first, we established a strong developers team consisting of 5 specialists from different IT fields, all led by one of our most skilled PMs at the time – Przemysław Taborowski.

This dedicated team was 100% responsible for designing and developing the whole analytical platform. Stepwise project included UX/UI design, web development, and front-end development tailored to the needs of Stepwise.

From the very beginning, the software we built had to be a true game-changer in the analytics game. That is why our specialized team provided:

• real-time monitoring,
• comprehensive tracking of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions,
• seamless integration with existing digital ecosystems.

All those features are instrumental in moving the energy sector faster towards Net Zero compliance.

After all, the correlation between emissions and extraction wells’ data enables monitoring of the carbon intensity per meter drilled across the Drilling and Well (D&W) operations.

During the development phase, we also ensured our platform's compliance with industry-standard protocols such as iQx P1, Keystone OPEN, and Kabal.

However, that’s not all.

We made Stepwise able to generate reports on demand that comply with international standards and regulations – significantly reducing the workload and eliminating efforts duplication.

Progress is monitored for both individual activities and at an aggregated level and its flexible API ensures that corporate clients always benefit from Stepwise’s services without straining their internal resources.

This feature implementation was a major achievement during the whole development phase.

To top that off, we also ensured that the Stepwise platform simplifies reporting management via comprehensive record tracking of all actions taken, making future due diligence reviews easier.

The features we introduced include:

• Reliable measurement of emission intensity of wells across global operations,
• Seamless process through digitalization and API integration,
• Standardization efforts support,
• Quick comparison of different assets in different geographies.
• Learned lessons, sharing, and recommended ERIs by Stepwise subject matter expertise.
• Future wells or field developments planning based on a calculated and auditable carbon footprint.
