Introduction

We know the effects of a large discussion on the future of QProperty and the changes to the properties of Qt 6. Gitpod as open-source? A new "era" coming for Chromebooks? A new electrocatalyst has been found that can turn water into ... ethanol - you will find this and much more in our September newsletter.

In this article:

Qt

  • JADam - visual scripting for Qt Applications - read more. It it a visual tool and a QML module which allows to easily automate chains of actions in a QML application. Looks like the author intends to open-source it soon, but I can't quite verify that
  • Daniel Nicoletti, the guy behind Cutelyst, has created ASql - an asynchronous SQL library for Qt, read more. It's pretty basic now (and only supports Postgre) but looks very promising - finally we can run queries without blocking our threads!
  • When you manually include MOC file in .cpp in Qt, like:
    #include "some_class.moc"
(we often do this in unit tests), it actually speeds up compilation quite significantly! Read more...
  • C++20 is just around the corner. Time to learn some of the goodies! ModulesRangesCoroutines. Honestly when I look at these, I feel like a newb in C++ :-)
  • I have mentioned a huge discussion about future QProperty class and changes to property system in Qt 6. Lars has now summed it all up and implemented an improved version which promises to include all the necessary features while also being lightweight and without major drawbacks. Read more...
  • Qt Creator 4.13 has been released. Read more...
  • Qt 5.15.1 is in final preparation. Changelogs are being polished, last fixes are landing, and general testing is ongoing. It should be released soon!

Web

  • Gitpod is now open source, read more. Not really my area, but it looks like a great tool to help web developers work on bigger projects, when they need to switch between multiple branches and environments often

IT

  • Intel is investigating AI-assisted programming. They say the world is lacking developers and increasing number of different hardware chips makes it harder for existing coders to know them all (or at least a useful subset). Getting computers to do part of the job for us could help the world move forward. Read more...
  • A big interview with Nate Graham, a QA manager and developer of Plasma (KDE). Read more...
  • Google has introduced a new, dedicated web page for ChromeOS developers. It contains code samples, news, guides etc. to help develop stuff for Chromebooks. They have also announced new features and updates to the OS itself, read more. We'll see how it goes, so far Chromebooks were quite seriously neglected when it comes to good APIs
  • Edge browser now has vertical tabs, read more. What times we live in, a browser from Microsoft is actually *interesting* :D
  • Ha, ha. Ha. Uh. Apparently Google plans to kill Duo and use Meet instead. Even though it was pretty obvious from the start, that they are creating yet-another-service-to-kill-it-later, it's just weird. They keep doing the same thing over and over and over again: they introduce a new communicator, kill the old one, then introduce a new one, kill the previous. This has already repeated 4 times in the last decade! Read more...
  • It's now been confirmed that MIP* = RE. Read more...

Science & others

  • Hubble Space Telescope has recently studied the Earth (yes, us!) during a total lunar eclipse. The aim was to learn how we could effectively learn details about exoplanets and their atmospheres far away. Read more..
  • APODs! APODs everywhere! Elephant's Trunk NebulaHDR MoonArp 227TIE Fighter Galaxy (not APOD)CygnusHelix nebula
  • Hubble's super-detailed closeup of Orion Nebula, with a likewise-detailed description from Phil the Bad Astronomer. Read more...
  • A new electrocatalyst has been found which can easily and efficiently convert carbon dioxide (and water) into ethanol, read more. This is good news for transportation, chemical industries, as well as (maybe...) for the environment
  • The great radio telescope at Arecibo has been seriously damaged. One of the cables snapped and ripped through the main dish. No info was provided about when it will come back online, but looking at the damages - it can take a long time. Read more...
  • Casimir force has been successfully used to manipulate and measure things in nanoscale. Read more...
  • Scientists have created a new class of laser light, which does not follow usual laws of physics regarding light. It does not refract and can speed up in dense materials instead of slowing down). Quite magical, but apparently it does not violate any actual laws of physics. Read more...
  • Core of SN1987 has been found. It sounds like this should not be any news - the core has been found exactly where it *should be* and exactly where it was predicted to be :-) And yet, it took a few decades to confirm this! Read more...
  • A bit pretentious article, but the topic is important. The global pandemic is shifting wealth massively into the top richest people's pockets. It's important to try and stay afloat. Read more...
