When to buy the engine — and when to build one

Most ecommerce products don't need a custom platform. Some genuinely do.

Why companies choose Ecommerce

Most shops don't need a custom engine. Platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce already handle products, carts, checkout, orders and customer accounts, so we start there and put your budget into what sets you apart.

Where ecommerce value actually compounds

The platform is the vehicle, not the product. Here's what's actually worth your engineering time.

Questions we help clients answer

Should we build a custom ecommerce platform or use a pre-built one?

For most startups, don't build what you can buy — a pre-built shop engine gets you selling faster. Custom makes sense once scalability and customization genuinely become the priority.

Do we need to support crypto payments?

It depends on your buyers, but payment options matter either way. Supporting card, PayPal and crypto payments means payment method is never the reason someone abandons a purchase.

Where should we actually be spending engineering time?

Your real value is your data and marketplace presence. Time spent reinventing things you could buy off the shelf rarely builds long-term value.

What does "marketplace thinking" mean in practice?

Onboard as many products as possible and build genuine buyer interest. The platform gets people to a purchase; the marketplace is what makes them come back.

How do the biggest ecommerce platforms actually win?

They win because they're where people already go to buy: a defensible market position built over time.

How to choose an MVP development company (and avoid the expensive mistakes)

Choosing an MVP development company determines whether your first version teaches you anything useful. Pick well, and you get a product that tests your actual hypothesis with real users. Pick badly, and you get code you cannot extend, data you cannot trust, and a few months you cannot get back. I have run Milo Solutions for sixteen years and watched founders make the same avoidable mistakes here. This guide covers how to evaluate partners and where the real risk sits.

MVP development cost: how much does it really cost to build an MVP?

Every founder who asks me what an MVP costs has read three articles saying the answer sits between $10,000 and $500,000. That range is true and useless for building a budget. Most MVPs land between $45,000 and $91,000, the standard row in the cost table below: 700 to 1,200 hours at senior Central and Eastern European rates. A thin slice starts at $19,000 and marketplace work reaches $190,000. Where you fall comes down to five things: how much you build, who builds it, what you connect to, how much design you buy, and what you commit to after launch. The number follows the scope.

MVP testing: how to validate your product before a full launch

The expensive way to find out that nobody wants your product is to build it all and launch. The projects that reach me in the worst shape are the ones where a founder spent nine months on engineering questions before answering the demand question, and then watched the signups flatten within weeks.MVP testing means checking that people want and will pay for your product before you build it. Name the assumption that sinks the idea if it turns out to be wrong, pick the cheapest test that measures what people actually do, set your pass threshold in advance, then decide whether to build, pivot, or stop.CB Insights examined 431 venture-backed companies that shut down since 2023 and identified the reason for failure in 385 of them. Of those 385, 43% had poor product-market fit and 70% ran out of capital, which the report treats as the final cause of death rather than the root problem; and because the analysis assigns several reasons to each company, the percentages total more than 100. Companies rarely run out of money doing something customers were desperate to pay for.
